Richard E. Goforth

December 22, 1920 — August 17, 2004

Attorney Richard E. Goforth, J.D., age 83, of New Philadelphia passed away in the Cleveland Clinic, August 17, 2004 after a brief illness. He was the son of the late Robert Lee Goforth and May Louise Pierce. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Ronald and one sister, Nell. He married Mary Davey of Barnesville, Ohio, September 9, 1944. They have one daughter Dr. Diane Goforth (Bryan) Ohning and four grandchildren, Gavin, Collin, Erin and Aidan, all of Greenville, S.C.Richard served in the Marine Corps during WWII and was a graduate of the V-12 officer training program. After receiving an honorable discharge he applied to and was accepted to Ohio Northern University Law School at Ada, Ohio, where he graduated in 1946 with a Juris Doctor degree. He and his wife Mary then moved to New Philadelphia where Dick opened his law practice above the former W.T. Grant store on West High Ave. He was to move his office two more times before arriving at the firm’s current location at 419 West High Ave. Dick also served as assistant prosecutor under Atty. Vernon Lee. He and Mary first set up housekeeping on 2nd St. N.W. in New Philadelphia until building their current home on East High Ave.Dick had a love of the sea and a passion for boats and sailing. He spent much time navigating the eastern coast of the United States and the Caribbean. He also loved playing guitar and raising horses. He raised and trained Arabian horses for many years on the family farm in Baltzley Valley. He had great respect for his law clients and prided himself on being able to serve the common man. He will be remembered by his many clients as an attorney who cherished honesty and ethics, and sincerely cared for those whom he served. He was also a member of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity and the Italian American Club.Memorial contributions may be made to the Red Cross Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund, P.O. Box 37243, Washington D.C. 20013.
