Richard C. Smith

Richard C. Smith, 84, of New Philadelphia, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 08, 2014 in Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia following a brief illness.

A son of the late Clayton and Lena Smith, Richard was born at East Palestine, Ohio on June 8, 1930.

He was a 1948 graduate of East Palestine High School then served in the United States Army in the Ohio National Guard. Richard was formerly employed as the owner and operator of Jaffee’s Shoe Salon, co-owner of Cooper- Smith Shoes and the program coordinator of Union Hospital’s Helpline for 11 years before retiring.

Richard was a member of Faith Christian Church at New Philadelphia, was past president of Dover Lions Club and a member of various other civic organizations.

He is survived by his wife, the former Alberta A. Maple and together the couple celebrated 61 years of marriage.

He is also survived by three daughters, Sheryl (Sherman) Bucher of Lakeland, Florida, Karen Maize of Dover and Sandy (Dean) Putt of Sugarcreek; five grandchildren, Gretchen (Robbie) Pearce, Sherman David (Erin) Bucher, Tyler Newbold, Bryce (Ashley Sanatore) Newbold and Amber Maize; seven great grandchildren, Amelia, Genevieve and Hattie Mae Pearce, Jackson and Macy Bucher, Lexi Beitler and Bella Sanatore.

Completing the family are two sisters, Patricia and MaryAnn, and three brothers Kenneth, Cecil and John.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty.

In keeping with Richard’s wishes a memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2014 at 11 a.m. in Faith Christian Church at New Philadelphia with Pastor Brian Flood officiating. A meal and a time of fellowship will follow at the church.
