Richard C. Dessecker, 91, of New Philadelphia, died Sunday, November 14, 2010 in the comfort of his home.A son of the late Calvin and Alma (Lee) Dessecker, Dick was born October 11, 1919 at New Philadelphia, Ohio.Dick graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1937. He honorably served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Dick served in the 13th Airborne Glider Infantry while stationed in France, eventually obtaining the rank of Sergeant.On September 20, 1945, Dick married the love of his life, the former June Shumaker of Columbia. During their younger years, the couple enjoyed camping and fishing at Leesville Lake.Dick was employed at Goshen Dairy as an ice cream salesman for 30 years. Following his retirement, he continued his employment with the Goshen Dairy Company as a part-time maintenance man for nearly 14 years.He was a member of Bisel United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees, the Pastor – Parish Committee and was a Past Chairman of the Administrative Board. He was also a member of the New Philadelphia American Legion Post #139. Dick was a skilled woodworker having built many pieces of furniture for his home, for other family and friends and for the church. He also enjoyed reading and completing jigsaw puzzles.He is survived by his wife of 65 years, June Dessecker; three children, David (Vinnie) Dessecker of San Clemente, California, Wanda (Don) Ammiller of Oregon, Ohio and Reenie (Jay) Stein of New Philadelphia; eight grandchildren, Samuel (Leigh) Moore of Charleston, South Carolina, Kimberly (Mike) Paris of Columbus, Ohio, Michelle (Don) Huss of Oregon, Ohio, Matt (Jessica) Ammiller of Strongsville, Ohio, Stephanie (Ron) Imer of New Philadelphia, Eric (Katie) Stein of Newport, Kentucky; Neil (Julie) Stein of Mentor, Ohio and Leah (Trevor) Dunne of New Philadelphia and 15 great grandchildren.Dick was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Barbara Moore; a sister, Lillian Dessecker and two brothers, Doyal and Ernest Dessecker.The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 17, 2010 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A service celebrating Dick’s life will be held on Thursday, November 18, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Roger Warnes officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia where the New Philadelphia V.F.W. Post #1445 will render military honors.
