Richard Allen “Rick” McDade, age 59, of Dover, died Saturday, May 20, 2006, in Harrisonburg, Virginia, the result of a motorcycle accident. Rick was born at East Sparta, Ohio December 1, 1946 to parents Homer R. and Jean McDade of Dover and the late Esther M. Hennis McDade. A graduate of New Philadelphia High School, Rick served in the United States Naval Air Corps before embarking on a twenty-year career as a truck driver. He was affiliated with Vance Trucking, The Kimble Company, and John Anderson Trucking before embarking on his own trucking career as an owner-operator. In the late 1980’s, Rick became a licensed insurance agent and advised clients throughout the area representing The Franklin Life Insurance Company. At about the same time, he began serving his five-year plumbing apprenticeship with Blasenhauer Plumbing. For the past eleven years, Rick has owned and operated Rick’s Maintenance Services Â? where his motto was “We take care of the little things” Â? and where Â? true to his word, – he endeared himself to countless customers who have come to depend upon him for help with not only the little things, but also the big projects that included renovations and new construction. His steady hand and honest work ethic made our community a better place for many families, and especially the elderly who live alone. Rick will be remembered as a gentle, giving man who always donned a smile when greeting a new friend. He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks # 510 at New Philadelphia and Post # 1445 of the V.F.W. also at New Philadelphia. Most of all Rich will be remembered as a husband, father, son, and grandfather who loved to help others, and whose greatest satisfaction came from doing something for someone in need. Survivors include his wife, the former Deborah C. Mushrush. The two were soul mates and married on a hot day in Las Vegas in 2000. His family also includes a daughter, Michelle L. and husband Howard Stevens of Dennison, step-daughters Devi Jo and husband Joel Herbert of Dover, and Amber and husband Billy Barkheimer of Dover, ten grandchildren, Bethany and Bret Penick, Alex and Axel Henry and Jayvin Herbert, Desiree Swinderman, Darron Hamilton, Zoe Fisher, Brock Barkheimer and Lance Barkheimer, seven sisters and brothers, Rose and husband David Mushrush of New Philadelphia, Ronald and wife Connie McDade of Dover, Mary Ann and husband Tom Heid of Uhrichsville, Diane and husband Dave Saffell of Wausion, Ohio, Randy Veigel of New Philadelphia, and Ronald Veigel of Clyde, Ohio, and his father-in-law, Harry Mushrush of New Philadelphia. Numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles complete the family. In addition to his mother, an infant brother, Robert McDade, and his mother-in-law, Lucille C. Mushrush, preceded Rick in death. Friends are invited to call Friday, May 26, from 2-4 and from 6-8 PM in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover where New Philadelphia Elks services will commence at 8:00 P.MPastor Ed Scaglione will lead a funeral celebrating Rick’s life Saturday morning, May 27, at 10:30 in the Dover Geib Funeral Center. Burial will follow at Ridgecrest Memory Gardens where members of the New Philadelphia VFW Honor Guard will render military honors. Following services at the gravesite, a reception will be given for family and friends in the hospitality suite of the Geib Funeral Center at Dover.
