Richard Allen Gurney, 79, of Dover, passed away peacefully in the Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia on Friday morning, March 7, 2014 following a period of declining health.
Born in Magnolia on April 10, 1934, he was the son of the late George Allen and Mary Catherine (Beans) Gurney. After completing his high school education, Dick began his professional career with the Timken Company. He was employed with Timken for 38 years until his retirement. As a young man, Dick enjoyed playing on the American Legion Baseball team.
On October 20, 1979, Dick married the former Mary Ellen Corell. Together, they were members at St. Johns United Church of Christ in Strasburg. They also enjoyed summers camping and fishing in Canada with dear friends.
Dick was an outdoorsman, whether he was hunting, fishing, or tending to his yard. He also was an avid Indians, Buckeyes, and Tornadoes fan.
Dick is survived by Mary Ellen; his daughter, Jamie (Gil) Maize of Alabama; his son, Greg (Kim) Gurney of Dover; his step-children, Eugene (Beth) Newton of Uhrichsville, Ted (Cindy) Newton of New Philadelphia, Todd Newton of Dover, Teri (Shawn) Arnold of Fort Mahave, Arizona, and Traci (Rance) Marmet of Navarre; his sister, Donna Fay Downs of Colorado; and 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his sisters, Norma Jean Robins and Catherine Artzner; and his step-son, Larry Newton.
A memorial service celebrating Dick’s life will be held in St. John’s United Church of Christ in Strasburg on Sunday beginning at 2:30 p.m. A meal will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. Cremation will be cared for through Geib’s Tuscarawas Valley Crematory.
