The Reverend Lawrence V. Hastie, age 92, who pastored Nazarene and United Methodist Churches in more than a dozen communities in Pennsylvania and Ohio, passed away late Sunday evening September 27, 2009. He had resided with his son Carl, of New Philadelphia for much of the past decade as his health declined. Born at Nanty Glo, Pennsylvania, March 8, 1917, Lawrence was a son of the late Michael and Sarah Smith Hastie. As a young man Lawrence studied from home to become a minister in the Nazarene Church. As his career evolved, Lawrence studied at the Evanston Theological Seminary at Evanston, IL. The Rev. Hastie served churches in Waterford, Stockdale, Greenville and Knox Pennsylvania, then West Columbia, South Carolina, and then back to Pennsylvania to serve in Vanderbilt and Bradford. Ultimately, Rev. Hastie became a pastor in the East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church, serving congregations in Brooklyn, near Cleveland Ohio, Center UMC in Cambridge, O., Lansing UMC, in Lansing, OH. Amboy UMC in Conneaut, OH, and Wildare UMC, in what is now Cortland, Ohio. Although he retired from active ministry in the late 1970’s he remained faithful to his church, having been a longtime member at First United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia. Survivors include two sons; Carl of New Philadelphia, O., and Paul (wife Patricia) Hastie of Mt. Clemmens, Michigan. Two granddaughters; Erin (husband Bruce) Ross, and Colleen (husband John) Mancuso, as well as a granddaughter-in-law, Tina Hastie of Mt. Clemmens, Two step-grandchildren; Michael (wife Chrissy) Tomlinson and David Tomlinson, three great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren, as well as a brother; Leo Hastie, of Kansas City, MO, complete the family. In addition to his parents, Lawrence is preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, the former Gertrude Paulene Brown. A grandson, Jeffery Scott Hastie, is also deceased. Friends are invited to call Thursday evening from 5-8 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. The Rev. Tal Lewis will lead funeral services for the Rev. Hastie at Wildare United Methodist Church, 7211 North Park Avenue Ext. in Cortland Friday morning at 11, where the family will also receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial alongside his wife will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens at Meadville, PA. Contributions may be made in Rev.
