Rebecca “Becky” J. Marvin (formerly Gilmore), age 71 , of Elkton, Maryland and formerly of New Philadelphia and Dover passed away unexpectedly following a brief illness on Saturday, April 2, 2011, at Union Hospital at Elkton, Maryland. She was born in Ravenna, Ohio to Kelly and Hope (Briceland) Marvin on June 5, 1939. After graduating from New Philadelphia High School in 1957, she went on to begin her Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She started her professional career as a first grade teacher during the first half of 1960, then completed her degree from Kent State University. After earning her degree, she taught in the New Philadelphia school systems in the lower elementary grades from 1962 – 1985 in various teaching capacities of everything from teaching first and second grades to tutoring youngsters to being an intervention specialist for learning disabled children. She then taught from 1985 – 1991 as a L.D. Tutor / Remedial Resource Teacher at Sacred Heart Elementary in New Philadelphia. Following her 32 years of teaching elementary education, she retired from Midvale Elementary, Indian Valley Local School District in 2001 as an Intervention Specialist. Her love of teaching was evident in the children’s lives she touched. Some of her former students were still in contact with her at the time of her passing. She was also a lifelong member of the Ohio Education Association. As all who knew her could attest, she loved teaching and encouraging children. She was truly born to teach and it showed throughout her years of teaching. Her passions prior to and during retirement included working in her flower gardens, feeding and watching the birds, and collecting moose-related items and porcelain Christmas houses. She was also an avid reader all her life and loved reading Christian novels. She is survived by her daughters, Jill Gilmore-Newland of Dover, Kelly A. Gilmore of Elkton, Maryland; a grandson, Timothy Gilmore-Newland also Dover; a sister, Suzanne (Marvin) Strong of Essex Junction, Vermont; nieces Elizabeth Mebrate of Malden, Massachusetts and Christina Strong of Santa Cruz, California; and an aunt, Helen Morgan of Dover. She has joined her mother and father in Heaven along with her beloved Golden Retriever, Rusty. She is already missed and will be, until her family and friends can meet her once again with the Lord.The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 7, 2011, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover. Rev. Hugh B. Berry will lead a funeral service celebrating Becky’s life in the Dover Funeral Center on Friday, April 8, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. In keeping with Becky’s wishes, cremation will follow services.Those wishing to do so may send the family personal condolences by signing the online guest registry located on the funeral home’s website.Charitable contributions in Becky’s name may be directed to a charity of the donor’s choice.
