Ray Ammons

December 4, 1942 — June 14, 2016

Leamon Ray Ammons, 73, of Dover, died Tuesday, June 14, 2016 in Mercy Medical Center at Canton following a period of declining health.

A son of Pauline (McClain) Ammons Singletary and the late Everett Ammons, Ray was born, December 4, 1942 at Hohenwald, Tennessee.

Ray graduated from Lewis County High School in 1960.  He was retired from Fleming Foods where he worked as a fork lift operator.  Following retirement, he worked as a bus rider for the Stark County MRDD.

He attended Zoar United Church of Christ and was a member of the New Philadelphia AMVETS and VFW and the Dover Eagles.  Ray enjoyed gardening and feeding birds but most of all he cherished his family and attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events.

In addition to his mother he is survived by his wife, Shirley (Geers) Ammons whom he married on September 2, 1967; his children, Melanie Jones of Bolivar, Jennifer Ammons of Canton and Raymond (Toni Ann) Ammons of Dover;  Marie Savini, whom he thought of as a daughter; his grandchildren, Heather Jones of Dover, Kali (Cole) Myers of Uhrichsville and Taylor Ammons of Dover; two great granddaughters, Brooklynn Adams and Payton Myers; his faithful companion, his dog, Mister and numerous nieces and nephews who thought of him as a second father.

Ray was preceded in death by his father and sister, Deb Myers.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 16, 2016 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia.  A funeral service celebrating Ray’s life will be held on Friday, June 17, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor John States officiating.  Burial will follow in Ft. Laurens Cemetery at Bolivar.
