Ralph W. Simmers, 76, of New Philadelphia, died Thursday, February 27, 2003, at Union Hospital in Dover following a brief illness A life long resident of New Philadelphia, he was born September 20, 1926, to the late Ralph and Helen Maloney Simmers. Ralph was a 1944 graduate of New Philadelphia High School, and then went to serve honorably in the US Army during WWII. While in the Army, he was stationed at Schofield Barricks in Hawaii. He worked with his father and then went on to own his family’s business, Simmers and Son House Movers, and worked for over forty years. Ralph loved racing boats and cars, which prompted him to form the Quarter Miler Hot Rod Club. He also enjoyed motorcycles and had several of them. He and his wife were proud supporters of the New Philadelphia Band Boosters and were instrumental in their recycling program.Surviving is his wife, Verna (Goshorn) Simmers, of the home, with whom he just celebrated their 42nd Anniversary with on February 25. Also surviving are two daughters, Brenda (Dale) Leady of Toledo and Carol Simmers, who is currently in the US Air Force and is stationed in MT. Home, Idaho; a son, Jim Simmers of New Philadelphia; and several nieces and nephews.Calling hours will be held Sunday, March 2, 2003, from 6-8 PM at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home in New Philadelphia. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, March 3, at 10:30 AM in the funeral home with Elder Glenn Carlisle officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in New Philadelphia.
