Phyllis A. Maurer, age 86, of New Philadelphia, Ohio, passed away on February 13, 2018 following a brief illness and surrounded by family.
Born April 29, 1931, she was a daughter of the late E. W. and Phyllis Anna (Veith) Ball of Fort Thomas, Kentucky. She was a graduate of Highlands High School, Fort Thomas, Kentucky, and Miami University, Oxford, Ohio where she received a B.S. degree in Business Administration and was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha social sorority.
While at Miami University, she met her best friend and future husband, John F. Maurer and on September 15, 1952 the couple married. She was a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed her family, her memberships with First United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia, College Club of Tuscarawas County, the former Woman’s Club of New Philadelphia, and Chestnut Society of Kent State University Tuscarawas. Among her other joys in life, Phyllis loved boating on Atwood Lake with her husband and family, playing bridge, crafting and wintering in Estero, Florida.
She is survived by six sons and their families: John A. (Gail) of Burlington, Massachusetts, Stephen V. (Pam) of New Philadelphia, Scott M. of Palo Alto, California, Gregory W. of Alexandria, Kentucky, Jeffrey G. (Louise) of Cold Spring, Kentucky and F. Brian (Julie) of Columbus; 11 grandchildren, Eric (Becca) Maurer, Andrew Maurer, Jessica Maurer, Yitzhak Maurer, Christopher Maurer, Justin Maurer, Stephanie Maurer and Michael (fiancée, Amber Petrella) Maurer, Allison (Chris) Klein, Leah Maurer, and Natalie Maurer.
Also surviving are five step-grandchildren, Shanda (Chad) Pierce, Derek Burger, Ryan Roessler, Daniel Roessler, Lee (Gina) Roessler and nine great-grandchildren; her sister, Marilyn (Paul) Shaver of Ft. Thomas, Kentucky, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, John, who died on November 29, 2011 and a grandson, Joseph Patrick Maurer, who died in an accident November 21, 2002.
The family will greet guests on Friday, February 16, 2018 from 4-7 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Rev. Jim Humphrey will lead a service celebrating Phyllis’ life in the funeral home’s chapel on Saturday at 1:30 PM. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery at Uhrichsville. A meal and fellowship will be held in the social hall of the First United Methodist Church following services.
