Phyllis Ames

Phyllis Ruth Ames, a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2024, at the Hennis Care Center in Dover.

Born on March 20, 1932, in Washington, PA, Phyllis was the daughter of the late Galen H. and Ruth L. (Frizzell) Davis. After graduating from DeVilbiss High School in 1950, she spent several years showcasing her acting and vocal talents at the Toledo Repertoire Theatre, where she played lead roles in numerous productions. Phyllis also worked as a dance instructor at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio.

During her youth, Phyllis met her future husband, Daniel Ames, while spending time with her best friend. Six weeks later, they were married on July 3, 1959, and their love story flourished for the next 65 years.

Though Phyllis never learned to drive, she never missed any of her sons' activities, and later, those of her granddaughters. She adored her family and was an unwavering supporter of their endeavors.

In 1971, Phyllis and Dan relocated to Tuscarawas County, where she became an active member of TWIGS. Her warmth, dedication, and caring nature touched the lives of many.

Phyllis will be deeply missed by her loving husband, Dan Ames; her son, Tim (Robin) Ames of New Philadelphia; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Munson) Wallace, Lindsey (fiancé Matthew Wallace), Caitlin (Tyler) Enos, and Kody Ames (and his mother, Joyce); her brother-in-law, Geoffrey (Diane) Ames; and her sister-in-law, Stephanie Manly.

In addition to her parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by her son, Carter Thomas Ames, on March 6, 2014.

A memorial visitation will be held at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory in New Philadelphia on Friday, January 17, 2025, from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m., with a service celebrating Phyllis’ life beginning at 4:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.

Memorial contributions in Phyllis’ memory may be directed to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Salvation Army, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Phyllis’ favorite quote, which she often recited, was: “She who speaks, must be obeyed.”
