Penny Marie Brown, age 61, of New Philadelphia, passed away Wednesday, August 13, 2008, at her home surrounded by her family after a courageous 4-year battle with cancer.Born May 10, 1947 in Dover, O., Penny was the daughter of the late Patrick Joseph and Jean Violet (Sloan) Welsh. After completing her formal education at Dover High School, she began working in the field of cosmetology as a hair stylist. She later worked at Bill’s Dairy in Strasburg, Twin City Greenhouse as a floral designer and also Sears Hardware in New Towne Mall.Penny was a dedicated employee, but more importantly, she was a devoted friend, spouse, mother and grandmother and a faithful child of God.Penny enjoyed sharing in numerous activities and clubs with her friends and was very fond of her membership in the Homemakers group, TOPS and also delighted in taking her girlfriends to tea.Penny’s family and she made many wonderful memories together participating in some of her favorite hobbies including camping, fishing and gardening. She was quite talented using her hands to create beautiful artwork also. Quilting, scrapbooking, canning and baking delicious apple pies were amongst her favorite pastimes. As an avid sports fan, Penny delighted in watching the Olympics and cheering for the Washington Redskins, Cleveland Indians and Cavaliers. (Go Lebron). In quiet moments at the lake or at her home, Penny enjoyed bird watching and reading her Bible. She not only read it, but she lived its teachings. Her membership with her church family at Roxford Methodist Church was extremely important.On November 5, 1977, Penny married her devoted husband, Jerry D. Brown. Together they shared in many wonderful moments, but most enjoyable were those spent with their family including her children, Dawn (Jerry) Goolsby of Harrisburg, Illinois, Joseph (Tracy) Brown of Bolivar, Amanda (Brian) Hockenberry of Dover, Jeremy Brown of the Carolinas; her grandchildren, Ashley, Rachael and Brooke Brown, Cierra and Savannah Goolsby and Cole and Caylee Hockenberry, and Wyatt Lineback, her honorary grandson; her brother, Tim (Bonnie) Welsh of Strasburg; a dear friend and caregiver, Dorothy Young of New Mexico; her brothers-in-law, Tom (Sue) Brown, Bob (Marilyn) Brown, and Dick Brown; and two sisters-in-law, Carol (Bill) Arnold and Toots Brown.Visitation will be held (TODAY) Friday, August 15, 2008 in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory, 116 Second St. NE, New Philadelphia from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A service celebrating Penny’s life will be held in the funeral home chapel on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Bob Mathias officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at Ridgecrest Memory Garden in Dover. Family and friends are invited to the Geib Family Center, located adjacent to the funeral home in New Philadelphia where Penny’s church family will prepare a meal following the committal service.The family requests memorial contributions be directed to either Roxford Methodist Church, 771 Roxford Church Rd.
