Paula M. (Shryock) Collett, age 91, departed from this earth suddenly on April 2, 2016 from her residence at Walnut Hills Retirement Home and went on to enter eternal life with her Lord Jesus Christ. Paula was born in Cleveland, OH on September 21, 1924, the daughter of Paul and Lillian Bessire. Paula grew up in Bay Village and Akron where she graduated from Buchtel High School in 1943. Paula later attended classes at Akron University, while working at Goodyear Aerospace during WWII. Paula met the love of her life, Bob Shryock, while still in high school and they married in 1945. They lived in Akron until 1956 when they moved to Dover. Bob and Paula were long time owners of the Kwik Shake Inn on the Boulevard. Paula is preceded in death by Bob, who passed in December 1972. Paula later remarried Maurie (Dane)Collett from Akron in 1989, who died in 2008.
Bob and Paula raised five sons and one daughter who all currently live in Ohio; Mike of Cincinnati, Dan (Cheryl) of Millersburg, Bill (Kathy) of New Philadelphia, Becky (David) Mustine of New Albany, Ned (Lesley) of Sunbury and Terry (Darla) of Canal Winchester. She has fifteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Her beloved brother Dale (Betty) Bessell currently live in Rochester Hills, MI. Her dear sister Jeanne (Sam) Winemiller passed in 1984.
Paula was an avid golfer and had the privilege of scoring, not one, but TWO holes-in-one in her lifetime. Her golfing children have always considered that second ace as having been scored on their behalf, since they NEVER had that thrill themselves. Paula enjoyed caring for plants and spending time outdoors to marvel at scenery such as breathtaking sunsets. She loved music, particularly classical and big band genres, and spent time painting in oils. Paula also encouraged creative expression in all her children. A wonderful homemaker and an excellent cook, Paula’s top priority was to provide a warm and happy home for her family. She was a devoted wife and mother, serving her husband and children with her whole heart. Paula’s family and friends were blessed beyond measure by her sweetness and Christ-centered joy. These lovely characteristics are her legacy, how she will be remembered by those who knew and loved her.
Visitation will be at Geib Funeral home on North Wooster Avenue in Dover from 5pm to 7pm Tuesday April 5. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday April 6 at 11:00 am at Dover Alliance Church, where Paula attended. Following the service, friends are invited to share a meal in the church’s adjacent Life Center. Internment will be at Dover Burial Park.
