Paul E. Duerig, 88, of New Philadelphia, passed away peacefully while in the care of Community Hospice Truman House on October 18, 2016 following a period of declining health.
Born on May 16, 1928 in Berne, Indiana, Paul was the son of the late Ernest and Ida (Gerber) Duerig. After completing his high school education at Washingtonville Central High School in 1946 and his Bachelor of Arts degree at the College of Wooster in 1952, Paul spent his career as the owner and operator of Buchanan Oil.
Paul proudly served his country in the United States Army in the 25th Infantry.
Throughout his lifetime he worshipped and was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in New Philadelphia. He was also a member of the New Philadelphia Lodge #177 F. & A. M., Scottish Rite, and the New Philadelphia B.P.O.E. #510 for numerous years.
On June 14, 1952 in the First Presbyterian Church, Paul married the former Mary Buchanan during a service officiated by Mary’s brother, Rev. Calvin Buchanan. Together, they were blessed with the births of three children. Mary preceded Paul in passing on December 13, 1996, following 44 years of marriage.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Goosman, whom he married on October 2, 1998; his three children, William Duerig of Florida, Diedre (Don) Coutts and Susan (Don) Whittingham all of New Philadelphia; his sister, Joan (Rev. Jim) Watt of Wooster; two grandsons, Hunter (Kodie) Duerig of Dover and Christian Whittingham of New Philadelphia; a great-granddaughter, Remington Duerig and several nieces and nephews.
The family will greet guests on Sunday, October 23, 2016 from 2-4 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Rev. Mark Unrue will lead a service celebrating Paul’s life in the First Presbyterian Church at New Philadelphia on Monday, October 24, 2016 at 10 AM. Burial with military honors will follow in the Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia.
