Otis D. "Odie" Mathias

Otis D. "Odie" Mathias, Jr., 60, of New Philadelphia, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2024, in his home, following a brief illness.

Odie was one of three sons born to the late Otis D. and Alice K. (Case) Mathias, Sr. and had graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1982. Odie carried with him a dedication to hard work, which he exemplified throughout his career at Shook Auto at New Philadelphia, where he made a name for himself detailing cars. His commitment to his job and the pride he took in his work was evident in every vehicle he touched.

Beyond his professional life, Odie was a true enthusiast of speed and motorsports. An avid NASCAR fan, he also actively participated in racing during his younger years at Midvale Speedway. His enthusiasm for the sport never waned, as he continued to be a loyal spectator, supporting the drivers and sharing the thrill of racing with friends and family.

Odie was also known for his lively spirit, quick wit, and a sense of humor that brought joy to all who had the pleasure of knowing him and he will be most fondly remembered for his ornery nature and his ability to make people laugh.

He is survived by his two brothers, Ed (Shannon) Mathias of New Philadelphia and Eric (Dawn) Mathias of Canton; he shared a special relationship with his nephew, Chad (Karmann) Mathias; his niece, Chelsey (Cameron) Scott and his great niece and nephew, Karlee and Krew Scott; also surviving are a nephew, Christopher (Rachelle) Mathias; three nieces, Breanna (John) Dickerhoff, Rebecca (Chris) Cox and Brooke Mathias and four great nephews, Chase Dickerhoff, Navy Cox, Kayden Mathias, Jacob Mathias and a great niece, Kelsi Mathias.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation care is to be provided by the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia and a private family graveside service will be held in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens at Dover at a later date.
