Norman W. Day

Norman Walker Day, 81, of New Philadelphia, died unexpectedly Sunday afternoon, June 1, 2003, at Aultman Hospital in Canton. He was born in Warren Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio on February 3, 1922 to the late Joseph F. and Bernice V. Walker Day. He graduated from Midvale High School in 1939. In November 1942, Norman enlisted in the U. S. Army. He served his country well as a member of the 4th Infantry Division, landing at Utah Beach and taking part in the liberation of Paris and the Jewish concentration camp at Dachau. He was honorably discharged in 1945 after having received the EAME Theater Ribbon with five bronze stars.In January 1943, he married Adeline C. Beahm at Roxford Church, where he attended as a youth. In 2002, Norman was honored as a veteran of the 18th Congressional District and received the French Jubilee of Liberty Medal, which recognized United States veterans who served in the Normandy Invasion. By profession, he was vice president and operations manager for GEX Hardy, Inc. in Sugarcreek. Along with his wife, Norman belonged to Emmanuel Lutheran Church and its Martin Luther class. His beloved Adeline died June 11, 1999. When not working, Norman enjoyed vegetable gardening. He was also a member of AARP and a life member of the Elks Lodge #510. Most of all, Norman liked traveling locally with his Adeline and time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-granddaughter. A moral, loving and giving man, Norm’s life continues by his decision of gifting his liver through organ donation to a 65-year-old recipient in Cincinnati. He is survived by their daughter, Pamela A. (Jack) Sweitzer of New Philadelphia; their sons, N. Michael (Peggy) Day of Aiken, SC and Joel Beahm (Jean) Day of New Philadelphia; their eight grandchildren, Troy (Susan) Furbay, Trevor (Wendy) Furbay, Pete Sweitzer, Michelle Day, and Matthew (Nora) Day, Olivia, Ethan and Isaac Day; and his great-granddaughter, Kennedy Lee Furbay; brothers, Joseph (Lois) Day of Midvale and Wayne (Ethel) Day of Roxford; sisters, Doris Schumacher of Goshen and Hazel (Donald) Graff and sisters-in-law, Lillian Day and Lola Gibbs, all of New Philadelphia; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, a brother, Ivan Day, preceded Norman in death. Church council services will be Tuesday (tonight), June 3, 2003 at 5:45 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM in the funeral home and in the church one hour prior to the funeral, which will be held Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at 11:00 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor Michael E. Walters officiating. Following the church service, Adeline’s cremated remains will be buried with Norman at Evergreen Burial Park. After the committal, a reception will be given in the church hall.
