Norma Jean Avon

Norma Jean Avon, 90, of New Philadelphia, died Sunday, August 26, 2018 in Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia following a brief illness.

A daughter of the late William and Norma (Kalp) Martin, Jean was born August 9, 1928 at New Philadelphia, Ohio.

Jean graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1946. Then, on November 23, 1947, Jean married James W. Avon and together they raised two children, Debra and Timothy. The couple shared 53 years of marriage prior to James’ passing on October 26, 2001.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia and worked as a clerk during her younger years at various retail stores. Jean enjoyed shopping and was known for her creative and artistic abilities. She especially enjoyed using her artistic talents while arranging flowers for many weddings over the years. Most of all, Jean cherished time spent with her family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Debra Jean Avon of New Philadelphia and Timothy (Vickie) Avon of Strasburg and many nieces and nephews.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James and her siblings, Mary Margaret Finneran, Mildred Frank, Edna Lamonica, Pauline Tylka and Richard Martin.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 30, 2018 from 5 to 8 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating Jean’s life will be held on Friday, August 31, 2018 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Susan Brown officiating. Burial will follow in East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia. Following the committal service, a luncheon will be held in the Geib Family Center at New Philadelphia.
