Nancy L. Butler, 69, of Scottsdale, Ariz., died Monday evening, Oct. 7, 2002, at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital.She was born June 16, 1933, in Salem to the late Orville C. and Irene S. matty Ritchey Backur. Nancy studied graphic art and graduated from Timken High School in Canton in 1951. She later lived in the Lima area, where her three children were born, and in 1969 the family moved to Scottsdale. Nancy worked for the Sentry Insurance Co. there for 18 years.With her wry sense of humor, she easily found a smile. Nancy was a good listener and constant advocate for her children. She also had a keen interest in the rights of animals and enjoyed caring for her sons’ dogs when the occasion arose. in the last year and a half, spending time with her only grandchild gave her great joy.She is survived by her daughter, Diane E. Butler and granddaughter, Emily Rose Butler, of Scottsdale; her son, Eric D. Butler of New Philadelphia; her brother, David A. (Patti) Ritchey of Salesville, O.; her stepmother, Esther L. Ritchey of Redford, Mich.; and her step-father, George Backur of Youngstown.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Tom, in January of this year.Private services will be held. To honor her life, contributions to Nancy’s facored organization, Defenders of Wildlike, 1101 14th St. NW, Washington, D.C., 20005 have been encouraged.
