Millicent Adella Onsted, age 96, of New Philadelphia died Friday evening, March 3, 2006, in Riverside Manor at Newcomerstown.Born April 11, 1909, at Ilkeston, England, Millicent was the daughter of the late Charles and Annie E. (Broadhurst) Seabrook. At the age of three, Millicent came to America with her parents, who settled at New Philadelphia. A 1927 graduate of New Philadelphia High School, she married Delbert N. Shepherd in 1928 and relocated to Londonderry, Ohio, where she would rear a family for the next two decades. Mr. Shepherd died in 1946, so Millicent and her young children returned to New Philadelphia to be closer to her family. She began a twenty year career as a bookkeeper for the former Twin City Equipment at New Philadelphia. On May 27, 1955, Millicent married Lloyd E. Onsted. The couple resided on 17th Street NE at New Philadelphia for the next twenty-six years, until his death on June 9, 1981. Millicent was a faithful member of the Broadway United Methodist Church where she was active in many of the ministries. A past member of the former Ladies Aid, she also was involved in a quilting group there, and was a member of the Ladies Bible class. She will be missed by her colleagues in the Union Grange, where she was recently recognized for having been a member for eighty years. Mrs. Onsted was also a member of the Dover Women of the Moose, the Old Town Ladies Aid, and played piano many years at the Smyrna Methodist Church. Millicent spent her winters in Homestead Florida from 1973 until 2002. There, she volunteered for many years in the Homestead Hospital. Millicent is survived by her daughter, Millicent and her husband Joseph Sayre of Dover; two sons, David and his wife Barbara Shepherd of Bowerston and Paul and his wife Mary Jo Shepherd of Mansfield, Texas; step-daughters, Esther and her husband Richard White of Atlanta, Georgia, and Lois Baker of Jupiter, Florida; a step-son, Kenneth and his wife Dottie Onsted of Warner Robins, Georgia; six grandchildren, Brad and his wife Debbie Sayre of Dover, Harold and his wife Angela Sayre of Carrollton, Virginia, Allan and his wife Stephanie Sayre of Dover, Dwayne and his wife Tiffany Shepherd of New Philadelphia, and Christopher and Marissa Shepherd both of Mansfield, Texas; five great-grandchildren, Joseph Sayre, Jilaine Kellner, Alec Sayre, and Ryan and Brandon Dotts. Numerous nieces and nephews complete the family.In addition to her parents, and husbands, Millicent was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Charles, and Byron Seabrook, an infant sister, Joy Seabrook, a step-son, Richard Onsted, and step-granddaughter Diane Baker. Friends are invited to call Friday, March 10, from 2 – 4 and from 6 – 8 in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Cremation will follow through the care of Geib’s Tuscarawas Valley Crematory. The Reverend Harry Milligan will lead a memorial service Saturday morning at 10AM in the funeral home’s chapel. Following the memorial service, family and friends are invited to a reception in the social hall of Broadway United Methodist Church.
