Michael Lewis Mathews, 74, of New Philadelphia, passed away surrounded by his family on Christmas morning, December 25, 2017, following an extended illness.
Born in Dover on March 13, 1943, he was the son of the late Robert Lewis and Vivian Ethel (Goulder) Mathews.
On January 9, 1966, Mike married his lifelong friend and companion, the former Jacquelin Irene Warfield. Together, they were blessed with the birth of their 3 daughters, Jessica, Rebecca, and Debbie.
After completing his formal education, Mike served in several capacities including the Vice President of the former Reeves Bank and most recently as the CFO at Twin City Hospital for 10 years prior to his retirement.
Mike served on the Board of Directors for the Reeves Foundation, played in the Recollections Band and Shively Yates Dance Band, and was a proud supporter of the New Philadelphia Quakers and school. Mike was affectionately referred to as “Grandpa Mike” by not only his biological grandchildren, but the many young athletes and students of New Philadelphia schools. He was a proud supporter with a deep admiration for all youth he interacted with at events.
Additionally, Mike was an avid fan of Midvale Speedway, where he attended the stock car races every Saturday night.
In addition to his wife of nearly 52 years, Mike will be deeply missed by his family including his daughters, Jessica (Don) Miller, Rebecca “Becky” Marie (Troy) Pallotto, and Debbie (Michael) Hutson, all of New Philadelphia; his sister, Diane (Robert) Ervin of New Philadelphia; his grandchildren, Rex (Tammie) Brown, Jr., Melissa (Dominic) Hagloch, Anthony “Tony” (Ally Escusa) Pallotto, Kurtis Pallotto, Michelle Hutson, and Michael Hutson, all of New Philadelphia, and Callie Newman and Lindy Conley, both of Uhrichsville; and his great-grandchildren, Logan Brown, Wyatt Hagloch, Jayce Escusa, Austin Conley, Riley, Decklan, Calan and Alaina Patterson, Zackery and Liam Newman, and Stephanie, Alicia, and Zane Robertson.
Visitation will be held in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia on Saturday from 1 to 4 pm, where the family requests all guests to dress in “Quaker Spirit” red and black. If guests have a Quaker Letterman jacket, Mike’s family requests you wear it to the visitation. A service will begin at 4 pm lead by Mike’s nephew, Ryan Ervin. Cremation will then be cared for through Geib’s Tuscarawas Valley Crematory in Dover.
