Melvin J. Wengerd, a faithful and loving husband, father, grandfather and servant of the Lord, passed away peacefully May 16, 2015 in the Community Hospice House following a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Born in Apple Creek on January 6, 1942, he was the son of the late Joseph J. and Ida E. (Miller) Wengerd.
His professional career spanned numerous years, ultimately retiring from Fleming Foods in Navarre.
Throughout his life, he enjoyed carpentry, electrical work, and tinkering in his workshop. Melvin shared his God-given gifts and talents with his church family, neighbors, and extended community.
Additionally, he had a tremendous love for his family, especially his grandchildren. Melvin was also an avid bowler, enjoying the sport with his family and friends alike.
Melvin married his lifelong friend and soulmate, the former Barbara J. Abbuhl on May 23, 1965. Together, they celebrated nearly 50 years of marriage, worshiping at the Goshen Community Church of the Nazarene.
In addition to his loving and faithful wife, Barb, of New Philadelphia, he leaves behind his sons, Mark Wengerd of Lake Worth, Florida, and Jeff (Diane) Wengerd of Midvale; his beloved grandchildren, Briana, Skylar, Brittney, Hailie and Amanda Wengerd; his siblings, Enos (Twila) Wengerd, Levi (Kay) Wengerd, Clara (John) Smith, and Mary Yoder; his step-siblings, Melvin Troyer, Mahlon (Patricia) Troyer, and Esther Kaser.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Ammon Wengerd.
Visitation will be held in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia on Tuesday from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. A service celebrating Melvin’s life will be held Wednesday in the Goshen Community Church of the Nazarene, 2501 David Rd SE, New Philadelphia, where Pastor Lee Randloph will officiate beginning at 10:30. Burial will follow at Ridgecrest Memory Garden.
Friends and family are invited back to the church following the committal service where Melvin’s church family will host a meal.
