A long journey came to a peaceful end for Melissa Marie “Missy” Horn on April 21, 2023 in the Community Hospice Truman House as she was surrounded by her loved ones.
Missy was born August 31, 1968 at Dennison, the daughter of the late John and Margaret Hunter. Margaret passed away when she was five. She was raised by the late Lois (Stone) Hunter, whom she considered her mother.
She was a 1986 graduate of Indian Valley North High School and Buckeye Joint Vocational School’s office technology class. She worked for 28 years as an agent for Groh Insurance at Dover before continuing her career at Pipes Insurance at New Philadelphia. During her eight years at Pipes, she was designated a certified service representative.
She married Jerry L. Horn Jr. on May 12, 1990. That union was blessed with two daughters, Mikayla Marie and Jenna Lee, who made Missy’s life complete. She championed every activity in which they were involved. Missy was looking forward to Mikayla’s fall wedding to Tytan Renner.
She was a longtime member of Jerusalem Church at New Philadelphia where she’d been a Sunday school teacher and member of numerous church committees. Missy loved to scrapbook with her Cackleberry Club and preserved her daughters’ every milestone.
Despite never having been a member as a child, Missy became a staunch supporter of the Tuscarawas County 4-H program. This year was her 32nd as an advisor for Town & Country 4-H Club. She served on countless committees over those years and touched innumerable lives.
As the wife of a dairy farmer, she was a constant advocate for the dairy industry. In 2009, she became the coordinator for the Tuscarawas County Dairy Princess program and enjoyed bringing attention to the industry through various festivals and parades.
Missy will be missed by her husband; her daughters; her sister, Mary (Darrell) Butler of Dennison; her brother, John (Patty) Hunter of Uhrichsville; her sister-in-law, Dawn Hunter of Florida; her mother-in-law, Janet Horn, and brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Deanna Horn, all of New Philadelphia; as well as many nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her dearest friend, Teresa (Daniels) Horn of New Philadelphia, who she met in Midvale 45 years ago.
In addition to her parents and stepmother, Missy was preceded in death by her oldest brother, Jeff Hunter; her father-in-law, Jerry Horn; and a niece and nephew.
Friends and family may call on Saturday, April 29, 2023 from 10 AM to 12 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home at New Philadelphia where a Memorial Service will begin at 12 PM. Burial will be in the Jerusalem Church Cemetery and followed by a fellowship meal at Jerusalem Church.
In recognition of Missy’s generous nature, please direct your memorial gifts to either the Tuscarawas County 4-H Endowment Fund (c/o 419 – 16th Street SW, New Philadelphia) or Community Hospice (716 Commercial Avenue SW, New Philadelphia) instead of flowers.
