Max W. Wenger, age 90, of Crooked Run, New Philadelphia, died peacefully Sunday, August 24, 2008 in Union Hospital at Dover following a brief illness.Born in York Township on August 15, 1918, he was the son of the late William and Leona G. (Schwartz) Wenger. On Feb. 25, 1949, Max married the former Minnie Mae Pugh, who preceded him in death.He honorably served his country in World War II in the Army Air Core and received numerous decorations throughout his military service. Recently, Max was one of the honored veterans to travel on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. to visit the World War II Memorial.Max was a hardworking and productive man. After returning home from the war, he began his career as a machinist and started farming in the Tuscarawas Valley. He retired from Babcock & Wilcox Co. in Canton where he worked for numerous years. At the time of his death, Max still raised more than 100 head of cattle on his farms. Prior to Minnie’s death, they enjoyed traveling across the Continental United States, Europe. One of his favorite trips was a 28-day vacation in Alaska, he recently recalled to his daughter.Max was also a lifetime member of Jerusalem Church, and a member of both the Tuscarawas County Farm Bureau and the Tuscarawas County Cattlemen’s Association.Max is survived by his children including a daughter, Judy (John) Flinner of Dover; and three sons, William (Valerie) Wenger, Fred (Linda) Wenger, and Terry (Juanita) Wenger, all of New Philadelphia.He will also be missed by his grandchildren, Andrea Flinner of Dover; and Lucas, Vanessa, Joel, Erika, Courtney and Ethan Wenger, all of New Philadelphia; two step- grandchildren, Jessie (Ray) Owens of Uhrichsville and Calvin (Jess) Funkhouser of Stow, O., and two step-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, Max was preceded in death by his sister, Frances Smitley.Friends are invited to call Tuesday (today) from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Dr. Terry Downin will officiate funeral services Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in Jerusalem Church. Burial will follow at Evergreen Burial Park where the New Philadelphia V.F.W. Post #1445 will render military honors. A reception will be given in the church fellowship hall following the committal service.
