Max R. Edie, age 94, of New Philadelphia, died early Saturday, March 17, 2012, in Schoenbrunn Health Care Center at New Philadelphia following a period of declining health.
A son of the late Joseph and Zella (Dutton) Edie, Max was born on July 7, 1917 at Sugarcreek, Ohio.
He attended school at Dover and entered into the United States Army Air Corp, 455th Air Service Squadron, on February 4, 1942. While serving, he was part of the East Indies and Papau New Guinea campaigns and received three bronze stars, the good conduct medal, as well as a distinguished unit citation prior to his discharge on September 10, 1945.
On February 14, 1946, Max married the former Kathleen Burson and as a couple reared four children, and shared in 58 years of marriage prior to her passing on January 6, 2005.
Max worked for Robinson Clay at Midvale and was later employed by U.S. Concrete of Mogador prior to his retirement. Soon after retiring, Max began working for Joy Manufacturing at New Philadelphia where he served the firm as a security guard.
When not working, Max enjoyed caring for home maintenance activities, tending to his vegetable garden and being with his family. He also enjoyed attending races at Midvale Speedway, watching the Cleveland Browns and watching figure skating with his wife, Kathleen.
He is survived by two daughters, Sue (Richard) Tillman of Fayetteville, NC and Belva Watts of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; sons, Bud Edie and Norm (Kim) Edie all of New Philadelphia; five grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Max was preceded in death by three brothers, Adrian, Darrell, and Donald and two sisters, Maxine and Frieda.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 from 5-7 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Rev. Hugh B. Berry will lead a funeral service celebrating Max’s life in the funeral home’s chapel on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 10:30 AM. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia.
Following services, the family wishes to invite guests to join them in the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the funeral home, for a time of food and fellowship.
