Mary Rebecca Weaver Page, at the age of 100, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2015 at the Cherith Skilled Nursing Facility of Willow Brook Christian Village in Delaware, Ohio.
The daughter of Katherine Mary “Kate” Maurer Weaver, Mary was born in Cleveland, Ohio on September 16, 1915. She was a life long resident of New Philadelphia, Ohio until ten years ago when she moved to live on campus at Ohio Wesleyan University.
Her life was dedicated to the value of education, focusing around her love for her family and her students. She appreciated the importance of giving her time and talents to church and community.
In 1933 Mary graduated from New Philadelphia High School and went on to graduate from Kent State University with her Normal School Certification and later a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She entered the New Philadelphia School System as a teacher in 1937 and remained active in the classroom as a full-time then substitute teacher for over 50 years.. In 2003, at the age of 88 years young, the Quaker Foundation honored her with the Retired Educator Award.
In April 1941 Mary and Joseph Farrand Page were united in marriage in the church at the Historic Schoenbrunn Village. They had been married over 60 years when Joseph preceded her in death on October 1, 2001.
As a young mother with three daughters, Mary taught school and was a member of the Child Conservation League and Sunday School Teacher in the UCC. Mary was especially proud to be a member of New Philadelphia Retired Teachers Forget-Me-Nots, of which her mother was a charter member. She was a life member of both the Ohio and Tuscarawas County chapters of the Retired Teachers Association, Chestnut Society, Tuscarawas County College Club, Dover Historical Society, and Friends of the Library. With her beloved husband, Joe, she enjoyed the activities of the Garden Club. Mary & Joseph were life members of the United Church of Christ in New Philadelphia, Ohio.
Surviving are her daughters Mary Jo Page-Phillips, Sandra Shores (Garry), and Margaret Ellen Page; her three grandchildren Ashton Joseph Phillips, Suzanne Gram Edie and Sarah Kathleen Shores (Ryan King); her brother in law Marcus Arthur Page; her sister in law Dorothy Saylor Page; ten nieces and nephews and numerous beloved friends in the New Philadelphia and Delaware, Ohio communities.
In addition to her mother and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother Kenneth E. Weaver, her brothers in law Richard Brock Page; Hart Farrand Page and sisters in law Marie Nell Savage Page and Jean Springer Page.
The family will receive guests during a memorial visitation on Monday, October 26, 2015 from 12:30-1:30 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Pastor Jeff Gerber will lead the service celebrating Mary’s life at 1:30 PM. Inurnment in the Evergreen Burial Park will follow. Guests are invited to join the family for a time a food and fellowship in the Geib Family Center following services.
The family extends deepest appreciation for the many kind remembrances and cards, so meaningful to Mary, on the grand celebration of her 100th birthday held September 13th, 2015 in Delaware, Ohio. Mary’s family is extremely grateful for the excellent care and love she received over the past eight years from the staff of her Willow Brook Christian Village family in Delaware, Ohio.
Memorial contributions in Mary’s memory may be directed to any of the organizations to which Mary belonged. A scholarship in her name has been established through the Quaker Foundation.
