Mary L. Carruthers, 97, of New Philadelphia, died Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at Union Hospital in Dover. Born February 5, 1906, in Guernsey County, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Aaron L. and Elenora Davidson Miller. Mary spent her life caring for her family as a homemaker. She enjoyed making quilts and crocheting afghans for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and also enjoyed flowers and gardening. She was a member Freeport Chapter #319, Order of the Eastern Star and the Otterbein United Methodist Church. Together with her husband, Carl E. Carruthers, of New Philadelphia, whom she married July 27, 1927, and would have celebrated her 76th wedding anniversary with, they raised two daughters, Helen (Clark) Todd and Shirley (Max) Moreland both of New Philadelphia and a son Paul R. Carruthers of Longs, South Carolina. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Darla (Lew) Clark of Upper Arlington, Dana (Carol) Moreland of Dover, David (Kris) Moreland of New Philadelphia, Mark (Okhwa) Todd, Virginia, Mary Lou (Mike) Lawver of New Philadelphia, Dale (Deb) Carruthers of Virginia and Cathy (Wayne) Collins of South Carolina; 19 great-grandchildren.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters and a brother.Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 16, 2003, from 4-8 PM at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home, New Philadelphia, Ohio. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 17, at 1:30 PM in the funeral home with Rev. James Taggart officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Burial Park in New Philadelphia. A reception will be held at the Otterbein United Methodist Church following the committal service. Memorial contributions may be made to Otterbein United Methodist Church 156 Beaver Ave. N.E. New Philadelphia, Oh 44663.
