Mary J. Swaney

Mary J. Swaney, age 78, of New Philadelphia, died peacefully in her home Friday, February 15, 2008. Born at Dennison, Ohio March 7, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Christian and Jessie Storrie Steiner. A graduate of New Philadelphia High School in 1947, Mary was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene at New Philadelphia. On November 3, 1947, Mary wed the late Darrell “Duke” Swaney at Covington, Kentucky. Together they reared two daughters, Sandy Greenwalt of New Philadelphia, and Barbara (husband George) Schwartz of New Philadelphia. A homemaker her entire life, she will be remembered as a loving mother, a devoted grandmother, and a caring person especially by her grandson Charles (wife Bianca) Ayers of Somerdale, Ohio, and three granddaughters, Mary Beth (husband Paul) Rucker of Canton, Ohio, Penney (husband Gary) Byers of New Philadelphia, and Kelly (fiance Steve Walton) Schwartz of Dover. Seven great-grandchildren, Brittany, Tyler, Connar, Brandon, Audrey, Skyler, and Shelby also survive. A sister, Virginia Donnell of Alabama completes the family. In addition to her parents and husband, Mary is preceded in death by her sisters Grace and Marilyn, and a brother Nelson Steiner.Cremation has been arranged, with burial, alongside her husband in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia.
