Mary “Helen” Quillen, 89, of New Philadelphia, passed away Sunday, January 6, 2019 in New Dawn Health and Rehabilitation Center at Dover following a period of declining health.
Born in Sylacauga, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Jerrell J. and Emma Tidwell McCarty. She had worked as a sales clerk for various area retail establishments and was a member of the First Church of the Brethren in New Philadelphia. Helen was a lifetime member of the New Philadelphia VFW Ladies Auxiliary and a former Avon representative. She was involved with the COAD Foster Grandparent Program, loved to dance and was an avid NASCAR fan.
On March 25, 1950, Helen married Clifford L. Quillen in Lucedale, Mississippi. Clifford preceded her in death in November 1994. Surviving are two daughters, Debra F. (Michael) Parton of North Chesterfield, VA and Teresa A. Everett of New Philadelphia; a son, Mark D. (Angela) Quillen of Burleson, TX; a daughter-in-law, Ethel Quillen of New Philadelphia, a brother-in-law, Robert Simons of Creston and a sister-in-law, Ruth Walton of Orrville; five grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, step- great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Helen was preceded in death by two sons, Louis L Quillen and David J. Quillen, a sister-in-law, Carol Simons and a brother-in-law, Donald Quillen.
In keeping with her wishes, Helen is to be cremated through the care of Geib’s Tuscarawas Valley Crematory. A Memorial service will be held Thursday, January 10, 2019 at 1 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home in New Philadelphia with Pastor Max Canfield officiating. Visitation will be held from 12 to 1 PM in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Community Hospice, Truman House, 716 Commercial Avenue SW, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
