Mary Elizabeth Hahn, age 94, of New Philadelphia, passed away peacefully early Friday morning, April 8, 2011, in Union Hospital at Dover, following a life of joy in serving others, extending hospitality, and comfort to her family and friends. Born at Gilmore, March 15, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Webster C. and Goldie J. Gilmore Butler. As a young child, Mary went to school in a one room school house, then went on to graduate from Gnadenhutten High School with the class of 1935. In 1941, Mary graduated from Muskingum University with a degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Culinary Arts.Mary taught at Scio, then Maple Heights before completing her career as a substitute teacher in a variety of school districts in Tuscarawas County. “Mom never let a guest visit our home without an offer of a meal, a snack, or a beverage,” according to daughter, Bonnie Jacobs of New Philadelphia. “It was very important that guests be treated with hospitality.”A member of the West Union United Methodist Church at Gilmore, she was a former member of the First Christian Church at New Philadelphia, and was a longtime member of the College Club of Tuscarawas County and the American Legion Post #137 Ladies Auxiliary.Mary will be deeply missed by her daughter, Bonnie Jacobs of New Philadelphia and her foot-warmer, four-legged friend, Holly Berry; and numerous friends and cousins.In addition to her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Evan Hahn, whom she married on August 16, 1947, and a beloved aunt, Fairy Gilmore. Friends are invited to call Tuesday from 11 to 1 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia where visitors will be treated to some of Mary’s continued hospitality with a light snack. Keepsake recipe cards will reveal some of her favorite, most sought after kitchen creations Â? including, appropriately, her “funeral salad”. The Rev. Beth Mansperger will lead Mrs. Hahn’s funeral service Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Interment, alongside her beloved Evan, will follow in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia.
