Mary E. Schwendiman

Mary E. Schwendiman, age 91, of New Philadelphia, and a longtime resident of Port Washington, died Friday morning, November 24, 2006 in Country Club retirement Center at Dover. Born on her family farm at Port Washington, February 5, 1915, she was a daughter of the late William Earl Bond and Lillian Porcher Bond. Following graduation from Port Washington High School, Mary attended Mount Union College and Capital University where she received a degree in elementary education. Together with her husband, the late Fred Schwendiman, the couple resided at Port Washington for many years where she was a homemaker and where she continued to use her teaching talents to relate to children as she welcomed her nieces and nephews into her home, sharing with them her love of gardening, sewing, cooking and animals. She especially enjoyed watching her favorite team, the Cleveland Cavaliers. For several years, she taught school before she and her husband, the late Fred Schwendiman, returned to Port Washington where she enjoyed homemaking and gardening. Following Mr. Schwendiman’s death in 1989, Mary moved to New Philadelphia to be closer to her family. Survivors include her sister, Ruth A. Lightbody, who now resides at Kansas City, Missouri, and several nieces and nephews including Bill (wife Carol) Lightbody of New Philadelphia, Christine (Ron) Binando of Romeo, Michigan, Sue Ellen (Ken) Nichols of Kansas City, Missouri, Grace Ellen (Doug) Elliott of Emlenton, Pennsylvania. Numerous great-nieces and great-nephews complete the family. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Schwendiman is preceded in death by her brother, John Bond, and a great-nephew Doulas A. Binando. Friends are invited to call Tuesday afternoon, November 28, 2006 from 4PM Â? 7PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia where services will be conducted Wednesday morning at 10:30AM in the funeral home’s chapel. Burial will follow alongside her husband in Union Cemetery at Port Washington. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tuscarawas County Humane Society, PO Box 92, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
