Marvin F. Beans, 88, of New Philadelphia, died Thursday, November 12, 2015 in New Dawn Retirement Community while under the care of Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County.
A son of the late George and Mary (Byers) Beans, Marvin was born February 15, 1927 at Roswell, Ohio.
Marvin attended elementary school in a one room school house in the Roswell area before attending New Philadelphia High School and graduating in 1945. While in high school Marvin was a member of the Quaker Football team and was proud to be part of the 1944 undefeated team. Marvin, along with the rest of the 1944 team, were inducted into the New Philadelphia High School Athletic Hall of Fame in January of this year.
Following high school, Marvin served two years each in the Merchant Marines and the United States Army. During his service he was stationed in Germany, Africa, England and Italy.
Marvin was known to many as the “Milkman”. For 28 years, he delivered milk for Goshen Dairy and was one of the last milkmen to deliver by a horse and wagon. He then went to work for Marlowe’s Pharmacy as a service manager and eventually retired after 21 years of service.
He was a member of Broadway United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia where he was a member of the Golden Rule Sunday School class. Marvin was an avid fan of the New Philadelphia Quakers and was a longtime football season ticket holder. He was also an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians.
Marvin enjoyed volunteering for the Quaker Foundation and was also instrumental in obtaining a Merchant Marines flag for the War Memorial Park at Clinton, Ohio. He was a milk bottle enthusiast and had a collection of over 500 bottles. He enjoyed attending auctions while looking for bottles and he especially enjoyed attending the National American Milk Bottle Collectors Association Convention in Hershey, Pennsylvania every year. Marvin was also a member of the DIVCO Club of America and the Tuscarawas County Historical Society.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret “Boots” (Kappeler) Beans whom he married on April 15, 1994; a daughter, Diane Murphy and a son, Ron (Dorraine) Beans both of New Philadelphia; his grandchildren, Suzanne Beans of Fairlawn, Ohio, Miranda Murphy of Dover, Adrian Murphy of Wooster, Josh Beans of Dover, Roni Rae Beans of Vero Beach, Florida, Paula (Mark) Lancaster of Strasburg, Amanda (Jeff) Shroyer and Lori (Adam) Ferguson both of New Philadelphia; 9 great grandchildren; a brother, Cleston (Rosemary) Beans of New Philadelphia; a daughter-in-law, Karel Beans of Dover; a sister-in-law, Mary Lou (Jerry) Redman of New Philadelphia and brothers-in-law, Don Bair of New Philadelphia, Bob Pearch of Sherrodsville and Bill (Patsy) Reynolds of Dover.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Bonnie Lee (Reynolds) Beans who passed away on February 7, 1993; a son, Timothy Beans; a granddaughter, Amber Beans and two sisters, Beverly Pearch and Zelma Bair.
Visitation will be held on Monday, November 16, 2015 from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating Marvin’s life will be held on Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Dale Fincher officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia. Following the committal service a luncheon will be held on the fellowship hall at Broadway United Methodist Church.
