Marvin Egler, age 85, of Dover, died Tuesday, January 28, 2014 in Union Hospital at Dover following a brief illness.

The youngest and last surviving of 10 children, born to the late Louis and Lida (Winkler) Egler, Marvin was born at New Philadelphia on January 1, 1929.

He was a 1947 graduate of New Philadelphia High School and entered into the education field where he taught at York Elementary School and briefly served as the school’s principal, prior to relocating to the Cleveland Area and teaching for several years. He ultimately served the Olentangy Local Schools as a Principal prior to his retirement.

Marvin enjoyed being an educated individual having attended two years of seminary school at Oberlin College and also earning a Master’s of Education. He was a lover of history, baseball, and crossword puzzles. He also loved sail boating, spending time with his family, and staying at his cottage on Lakeside. Marvin was an automobile enthusiast who collected hood ornaments and enjoyed driving Volkswagens.

At an early age, Marvin was confirmed and baptized in Jerusalem Church and later joined the First United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia. Additionally, Marvin enjoyed the time spent as a member of the Schoenbrunn Valley Barbershop Chorus.

He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews that include, Jim (Linda) Egler of Gnadenhutten, Marilyn Robinson of Dover, Dave (Brenda) Egler of Port Washington, Dennis (Becky) Egler of Baltic, Jane Egler of New Philadelphia, Tom ( Kathy) Maurer of Indiana, Claudia (Tom) Baytos of Niles, Ohio, and Susan Terrry of New Philadelphia; and a sister-in-law, Lucille Johnson of New Philadelphia. Completing the family are numerous other extended family members.

In addition to his parents, Marvin was preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy Stauffer, Ethel Henney, and Josephine Maurer and six brothers, Russell, Elson, Kermit, Wayne, Joseph, and Paul Egler.

The family will greet guests on Friday, January 31, 2014, one hour prior to services from 9:30 – 10:30 AM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Pastor Tom Klaserner will lead a service celebrating Marvin’s life in the funeral home’s chapel on Friday at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow in the Jerusalem Church Cemetery. Following services, a light meal and a time of fellowship will be held in the Jerusalem Church Social Hall.
