Martha Kail, age 86, of Dover, died peacefully early Thursday afternoon, January 31, 2008 in her home, just five days shy of her 87th birthday. Born February 4, 1921, at Gnadenhutten, she was a daughter of the late Wallace and Mayme Wheland Lockett. A resident of the Tuscarawas Valley for nearly her entire life, Martha was a familiar voice on the switchboard at Union Hospital for many years. She put her exceptional vocal skills to use by singing with the Tuscarawas Philharmonic Orchestra as well as the Sweet Adeline and Valley Voices Chorus. Martha was a past president of the Tuscarawas Chapter of Sweet Adeline’s, a ladies barbershop chorus. For the past twenty-five years, Martha has been a member of the Roxford United Methodist Church. On April 25, 1942, Martha married her high school sweetheart, Charles “Chuck” Kail. The couple celebrated their sixty-fifth wedding anniversary together last year. During their time together, they reared a family that includes a daughter, Theresa (husband Donald) Bartsch of Canton, and a son, Michael (companion Schelley Fitzsimmons) Kail of Columbus. Survivors, in addition to her husband, who resides at Dover, include her sister Lucille “Sis” Fox of Gnadenhutten, and grandsons Adam (wife Fran) Kail and their children Karley and Blake Kail all of Tempe, Arizona; and Aaron (wife Joci) and children Anderson and Gannon Kail all of Mason, Ohio. In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her brothers Wallace “Bud” Lockett and William Lockett. Friends are invited to call Monday morning from 10AM to 11AM in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover, where the Reverend Bob Mathias will lead Mrs. Kail’s funeral service Monday at 11AM. A luncheon will immediately follow the funeral service in the funeral center’s hospitality suite. The funeral cortege will depart at 1:30PM following the luncheon for a committal in Gnadenhutten Union Clay Cemetery at 2PM.
