Mark A. Smith

Mark A. Smith, 66, of Gnadenhutten, passed away Thursday, October 7, 2021 at Aultman Hospital in Canton.

Born in Dennison, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Thelma (McKee) Smith and was a 1973 graduate of Claymont High School. He then furthered his education and earned his Associate Degree in Business Management, a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and his Master’s Degree in Business Management from Kent State University, Liberty University and Regent University, respectively. Mark worked while attending college to provide for his family but ultimately, he landed his “Dream Job” as Controller for Dover-Phila Federal Credit Union where he had worked for over 27 years, before his health forced him to retire.

Possessing a strong Christian faith was very important to Mark. As a member of Grace United Methodist Church at Uhrichsville, Mark served in a number of positions within the church from volunteer to trustee and teacher to preaching during Sunday Morning services. He loved reading his bible and could honestly say that he never missed a day in over 35 years.

Sports were also a big part of Mark’s life. From playing little league, high school and Class “A” baseball to college tennis, Mark excelled. He played fast pitch baseball well into his mid 40’s and won a number of championships in both baseball and tennis but his greatest achievement was being inducted into the Tuscarawas County Baseball Hall of Fame.

November 1, 1978 Mark married Carol S. “Sue” (Cromley) Smith and this year would have celebrated 43 years of marriage. Also surviving are his children and their spouses, Stephanie Smith (Patrick Custer) of New Philadelphia, Katie (Mark) Fleming of Westerville and Andrew (Lisa) Smith of Stow; two sisters, Marla Kasunic of Winter Haven, Florida and Elaine Carmany of New Philadelphia and six grandchildren, Drexel Fleming, Dean Fleming, Dezi Fleming, Evanna Smith, Isaac Smith and Lucas Smith.

In addition to his parents, a sister, Cheryl Swinderman and two brothers, David Smith and Jack Smith also precede him in death.

In keeping with Mark’s wishes, he is to be cremated through the care of the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia and a private family service will be held at a later date.
