Marjorie Eichel Funk, age 87, of New Philadelphia, passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning, September 29, 2010, in Amberwood Manor at New Philadelphia. Born at New Philadelphia, August 1, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Carl E. and Irma Angel Eichel. A 1941 graduate of New Philadelphia high school, Marjorie and her future husband, Aaron Funk, had known one another since the first grade. Both Marjorie and Aaron would later play in the New Philadelphia High School Band, and both went on to serve the United States of America during World War II, – Marjorie as member of the Army Nurse Corps. The couple wed May 2, 1948, and have resided in New Philadelphia ever since. Marjorie served the City of New Philadelphia as the city health nurse in the late 1940’s. For much of the 1950’s, Marjorie assisted Dr. Hahn in the operation of his family medical practice. At the appointment of Mayor Evans in 1960, Marjorie served on the city health board. She was instrumental in implementing the Medicare standards for the city health board and once again donned a white uniform to work at the health department until 1972. The 1970’s were growing times for the Tuscarawas Valley, and Marjorie joined her husband in the operation of the Aaron Funk Realty Company. They worked side by side until 1990, living above their South Broadway office for many years. Marjorie was a member of the First United Church of Christ at New Philadelphia. She also formerly served as the Past Commander of both the New Philadelphia American Legion Post #139 and the Tuscarawas County American Legion.Survivors, in addition to her husband of sixty-two years, includes one living first cousin, Marianne Kilpatrick of Dennison, as well as two sisters-in-law; Gloria Funk of Cambridge, and Mary Funk of West Milton, Ohio. Several nieces and nephews, Kathy Anderson of Enfield, Connecticut, Heidi Mercer of West Milton, Ohio, Wayne Funk of Union, Ohio, Richard Funk of Richmond, Indiana, Brenda (husband, John) Ackerman of Anderson, Indiana and Barbara (husband, Michael) Deniston of Cambridge completes the family. In addition to her parents, Marjorie is preceded in death by her two brothers-in-law, Wilford and Ivan Funk. Friends are invited to call Monday, October 4, 2010 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A memorial service celebrating Marjorie’s life will follow in the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. with Pastors Jeffrey Gerber and Jill Lovett officiating. Inurnment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia where the New Philadelphia V.F.W. Post #1445 will render military honors.
