Mrs. Marilyn T. Williams, 83, a former longtime resident of New Philadelphia passed away peacefully on Friday, February 28, 2014 at Sunset Village in Sylvania, Ohio of complications from Alzheimer’s disease.
Born April 14, 1930 in Uhrichsville, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Charles T. and Gladys E. (Vigus) Greenlee. A 1948 graduate of Uhrichsville High School, she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Speech and Hearing Therapy from Ohio University in 1952 where she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority and later received her Master’s Degree in Speech and Language Pathology from Kent State University. Mrs. Williams was a speech and hearing therapist for the New Philadelphia City Schools for many years before retiring in 1993, after which she was a substitute therapist in several school districts in Tuscarawas and Holmes Counties. After moving to Sylvania in 2006, she was involved with the Ohio Reads mentoring program and attended Epworth United Methodist Church.
Until becoming ill, she was a long-standing and active member of the First United Church of Christ and participated in social events at the First United Methodist Church, both at New Philadelphia. She was a former member of the First United Methodist Church at Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas County Historical Society and the Union Country Club. She was an Honorary Member of the College Club of Tuscarawas County and served on its scholarship committee. An active citizen in the community, Mrs. Williams was proud of the area’s quality of life and attractions and was a regular attendee at the performances of the Tuscarawas Philharmonic, Little Theatre of Tuscarawas County, Trumpet in the Land and summer concerts at Tuscora Park. She was a frequent patron of the New Philadelphia Library and its special events, enjoyed traveling and participated in area bridge clubs and various golf, tennis and bowling leagues. She possessed a special concern for her students and those less fortunate than herself. She considered her family as her greatest accomplishment.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death in 1987 by her beloved husband, G. Robert (Bud) Williams whom she married August 16, 1953. Mrs. Williams is survived by four children; Reverend Carol Ann (Marc) Williams-Young of Toledo; Craig R. (Cindy) Williams of Cincinnati; Douglas C. (Missy) Williams of Medina; and David J. Williams of Baltimore, MD. She is also survived by a sister, Carolyn (Greenlee) Stewart of Columbus; brother, William (Kay) Greenlee of Aurora, CO and sister-in-law, JoAnn (Williams) Hart of Toronto, Ontario; grandchildren, Peyton (Chris) Zeek of Fairfax, VA, Lydnsey and Kaitlyn Williams of Cincinnati, Julianne and Allison Williams of Medina, and Margo and Peter Williams of Baltimore, MD. She is also survived by three nieces and four nephews.
Visitation will begin one hour prior to a memorial service to be held on Saturday, March 22nd at 11:00 in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home at New Philadelphia with Reverend Carol Williams-Young officiating. All are invited to join the family for a fellowship reception following the service in the Geib Family Center adjacent to the funeral home. In keeping with her wishes, Mrs. Williams has been cremated and will be buried prior to the service at Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia.
