Marge Hanson

December 31, 1969 — June 1, 2004

Marge Hanson, a resident of New Philadelphia, died June 1, 2004, from heart complications. Marge was born in Marlborough, New York, grew up in Brooklyn and Long island, where she met her future husband, William Hanson. After graduating from Sewanhaka High School in 1940, she enlisted as a WAVE in the US Navy, serving her country during wartime, she attained the rank of 3rd Class Petty Officer. Marge and Bill were married on October 3, 1945. They relocated to Dover, Ohio, when Bill accepted a position at Joy Manufacturing. In the early 1960’s when faced with being transferred to another state, they decided to make New Philadelphia their home, and went into business for themselves. Starting from a small garage, Marge and Bill worked side by side to build Dover Conveyor into a thriving business. Although her official title was Vice President, Marge took on any job the company required, from receptionist to truck driver. The business was sold in 1980. Marge lost her partner of 37 years in 1982. In addition to the business, Marge devoted herself to her family, friends and organizations with her characteristic optimism. She was a member of the Union Hospital Auxiliary for more than 30 years. A lifetime participant in the Little Theatre of Tuscarawas County, she served as president for two terms, and was instrumental in working toward the building of the theater at its present location. She was also a member of Friends of the Tuscarawas County Public Library for more than 20 years.Even though she was born in New York, Marge always thought of Ohio as her true home, choosing to raise her family here. She is survived by 3 children: Andrea Hanson, of New Philadelphia; William (Ana) Hanson of Hartford, CT; and Liz Hanson (Mike Brockway) of Michigan City, Indiana. Family and friends are invited to an open house in Celebration of Marge’s Life Friday afternoon, June 4, 2004 anytime after 3 PM at the Hanson residence, 428 North Broadway, New Philadelphia.
