Margaret Ellen Boyd, 92, of Dover, passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family members in the Hospice House Sunday morning, December 15, 2013.
Born in Dover on October 13, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Bernice E. (Spring) Gowins. After graduating from Stone Creek High School in 1940, she spent her professional career as a cook at various area restaurants and numerous years at Union Country Club.
Her faith was nurtured at the First United Methodist Church in New Philadelphia where she was a member and also active with the Willing Workers.
Margaret also greatly enjoyed collecting treasurers, especially Santa Clauses. Other hobbies she participated in included traveling nationally and internationally and cheering for the Cleveland Indians.
She had a great love for her family and enjoyed spending time with all of them. She was a talented quilter and made beautiful quilts for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Other groups Margaret was a member with include the AARP in Sandyville, the Ladys’ Aide, and the Country Club Girls that met monthly for a social gathering.
She will be deeply missed by her five sons including Larry (fiancé, Joyce Fridley) Veigel of Groveport, O., William M. (Karen) Murphy of Strasburg, Richard F. (Charlene) Murphy of Granville, O., Ronald E. (Christina) Murphy of Dover, and Thomas A. (Laurie Gintz) Murphy of Dover; her siblings, Polly Wilson, Earl Gowins, Mary Douglas, and Thomas Gowins; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, George “Bill” Boyd and William M. Murphy; her siblings, Donald Gowins, Elden Gowins, Jean McPherson, Gary Gowins, Dale Gowins, and Russell Gowins; and her grandchildren, Timothy Veigel and Kathleen Murphy.
Visitation will be held in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia on Friday, December 20, 2013 from 5 to 8 p.m. A service celebrating her life will be held in the First United Methodist Church on Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m. Immediately following the service, a meal will be shared in the church’s Life Center.
