Margaret Catherine Ackerman Sanford, 95, of Stonecreek, died July 30, 2006, at New Dawn Retirement Community. Margaret was born on October 29, 1910, in Bucyrus, Ohio, to the late Caroline Kuhn and G. Fred Ackerman. She graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1928 and attended Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Kent State University, and The Ohio State University. Margaret taught vocal music in Licking County School from 1956 until 1966. She was a Title I Reading teacher, substitute teacher and librarian in Harrison Hills School District from 1966 until 1986. Margaret’s love for music was evident as she was an active member of numerous musical organizations including the Cincinnati Musical and Literary Society, the MacDowel Music Study Clubs in New Philadelphia, Uhrichsville, and Newcomerstown, the Newark Music and Study Clubs, and the New Philadelphia and Dover Singing Violins. She was also a member of Alpha Delta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.Margaret was a well known vocal and violin soloist in Cincinnati, Harrison, Licking and Tuscarawas Counties. In 1932 she was first chair violin in the newly formed Tuscarawas County Orchestra under the direction of Gilbert Rhoem, which later became the Tuscarawas Philharmonic Orchestra. She was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church in Newark, Ohio.She is survived by her children, Fred (Peggy) Sanford of Statesville, North Carolina, Judy (Walter) Riggs of Heath, Ohio, Jim (Linda) Sanford of Guyton, Georgia; 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; niece Joanne Williams Hart of Toronto, Canada.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death in 1972 by her husband Everett A. “Sandy” Sanford of whom she married in 1933, her sister and brother-in-law, E. Marie and George H. Williams and an infant brother.A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 3, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory chapel in New Philadelphia with visitation one hour prior to the service. Internment will be at the Evergreen Burial Park in New Philadelphia. A reception will be held at the Geib Family Center following the committal.The family requests memorial contributions may be made to scholarships or the charity of your choice.
