Marcella M. Smart-Mason, age 88, of Dover, died Tuesday, August 5, 2008, in Union Hospital at Dover following a period of declining health.A daughter of the late Theodore and Carrie (Casebeer) McFarlan, Marcella was born on May 23, 1920, at New Philadelphia.A graduate of Dover High School class of 1939, Marcella kept in touch with her classmates through the years and looked forward to their reunions.Marcella was preceded in death by her first husband, Winston Smart, with whom the couple reared one son. She later married Doyle Mason and the couple celebrated nearly ten years of marriage prior to his death in 1996.For many years Marcella served area businesses as an accountant. For more than 25 years she was employed by Rea & Associates of New Philadelphia and later served the former Tuscarawas County AAA as an in house accountant and bookkeeper.Additionally, she was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia and kept an active church life until her health would no longer allow her to do so.Marcella’s retirement was spent keeping company with three very close friends Lou Maize, Betty Morgan and Vi Arnold. The three kept company playing dominos and cards and maybe would share an occasional story or two.Marcella also had three very close friends, Pat Powers, of Pennsylvania, Dorris Godfrey and Sue Crone both of New Philadelphia with whom she had kept in close contact with through the years.As a cat lover, Marcella would often care for stray cats in her neighborhood and even adopted and cared for a neighbor’s cat, named Stormy.Just as Marcella cared for neighborhood cats, her neighbor’s also cared and looked after her. She appreciated the fact that they often looked in on her and was happy that through their care she was able to live on her own as long as she did.Marcella is survived by her son, Richard (Donna) Smart of New Philadelphia; a brother, John “Bruz” McFarlan of Lakewood, California; two grandchildren, Richele (Eric) Angstadt of Beaufort, South Carolina, and Corporal James Smart of Camp Lejeune. North Carolina; and one great-granddaughter, Taylor Ruth Angstadt.In addition to her parents, former husband Winston, and late husband, Doyle, Marcella is preceded in death by a sister, Catherine “Sweetie” Geller.The family will receive friends on Friday, August 8, 2008, from 11:00 AM â?? 12:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Rev. Dr. Steve Bailey will lead a celebration of Marcella’s life in the funeral home’s chapel at 12:00 PM with burial to follow in the Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia. Following the committal, the family would like to invite guests to join them in the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the funeral home, for a time of food and fellowship.
