M. Ellen Hicks

Marian Ellen Hicks, 94, a longtime resident of New Philadelphia, known for her kind and welcoming personality, passed away peacefully, with her daughters by her side, on Sunday, August 11, 2024, in Lifecare Hospice – Truman House at New Philadelphia.

Born on July 12, 1930, in Dover, Ohio, Ellen was the daughter of the late Henry T. and Ella L. (Waddington) Patterson. Ellen married the love of her life, William Hicks Jr. and together, shared over 57 years of marriage before his passing in March of 2005.

Alongside her husband, Ellen co-owned and operated the former Puritan Laundry, Dry Cleaning and Linen Rental Service at New Philadelphia, showing dedication and hard work throughout her career. However, it was in the time with her husband, daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren that Ellen found her most cherished and happiest moments. They filled her life with immense joy and love, leaving behind memories that will be treasured forever.

Ellen possessed a generous, fun-loving spirit with a passion for traveling. Throughout their life, she and Bill enjoyed many trips with their close-knit group of cherished friends. She especially loved boating on Atwood Lake, spending winters in Florida, or basking in the serenity of their second home on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

She was a lifelong member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in New Philadelphia, and a dedicated member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Atwood Yacht Club, and Union Country Club.

Ellen is survived by her three daughters, Susan Herriott of Sarasota, Florida; Marcia (Lloyd) Stuart of New Philadelphia and Lauren (Scott) Shelley of Easton, Connecticut; five grandchildren, Elizabeth (Daryl) Bell, Scott Herriott, Ethan Stuart, Nola and Evan Shelley; four great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Ellen was preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah Ann Hicks; her son-in-law, Donald Herriott; a sister, Katherine Graves and three brothers, James, Henry and John Patterson.

In keeping with her wishes, a private family graveside service will be held in East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia with Pastor Brian Flood officiating. The Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia has been entrusted with her service arrangements.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Lifecare Hospice-Truman House and Park Village Health Care and Assisted Living Center at Dover as well as personally thanking Alyssa, Lexi, Makayla and Maddie for their caring love and kindness.

The family requests that donations may be made in her memory to Lifecare Hospice-Truman House at 716 Commercial Ave SW. New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.
