Former New Philadelphia Police Chief and Retired Tuscarawas County Sheriff, Louis “Lou” Joseph Clark, age 85 of Quaker City, O. and formerly of New Philadelphia, passed away Saturday morning, December 19, 2009 in Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling, West Virginia, following a period of declining health.Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Lou was the son of the late Cecil and Edna (Wurtle) Clark. After graduating from high school, he honorably served our country in the 100th Infantry Division in the United States Army during World War II. While in Germany, Lou was wounded and received a purple heart.Lou received training from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and put that training to work beginning in the early1950’s as a patrolman and working his way up to serving as chief of the New Philadelphia Police Department. Upon leaving the department, he served as Chief Juvenile Probation officer and ultimately completed his law enforcement service to our community as the Tuscarawas County Sheriff until his retirement in 1985. He was the oldest living member in the Tuscora Lodge #4 of the Fraternal Order of Police, a 53 year member of New Philadelphia Lodge # 177, F. & A. M. and recently the Masonic Lodge at Hendrysburg, O., the Carl C. Stoller Post #1445 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and post #494 of the American Legion at Sugarcreek, Ohio and at Barnesville, O after moving to Guernsey County.On October 23, 1945, he married the former Bernice Williams. Together they reared daughters, Suzi (husband, Henry) Thomas of Quaker City, O. and Linda (husband, Tony) Tsarouhas of Akron.In addition to his daughters, Lou will be deeply missed by his grandchildren including Air Force Staff Sgt. Kasana N. Ickes, Kari Ickes, Jody Thomas, Pano Tsarouhas and Katerina Tsarouhas, three step-grandchildren; Ray, Lee and James Thomas, two step-great-grandchildren; Adam and Adrian Thomas, and his sister; Ella Floyde of Florida.Lou was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Bernice who passed away October 7, 1998, his infant son, William A., and his sister, Freda Watts.Friends are invited to call Tuesday afternoon from 2 â?? 4 and from 6 â?? 9 in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia where Fraternal Order of Police Lodge services will commence at 8:45. A Masonic Lodge of Sorrow service will convene at 5:45 prior to the beginning of evening visiting hours. Cremation is planned with inurnment in a private ceremony at Evergreen Burial Park.Memorial contributions in Lou’s memory may be directed to the Fraternal Order of Police Tuscora Lodge #4, P.O.
