Lorin “Burt” Beaber

Lorin “Burt” Beaber, age 88, of New Philadelphia, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 16, 2016, following a short period of declining health in Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia.

A lifelong member of the community, Burt was born April 18, 1928 at New Philadelphia, and was a son of the late Lorin H. and Harriet (Hawk) Beaber.

Burt was a 1946 graduate of New Philadelphia High School, and earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Heidelberg University in 1950. In 1970, Burt obtained his Master’s Degree in Counseling from Xavier University. Burt also spent two years serving his country during the Korean War while stationed at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama as a missile instructor.

As a student at both New Philadelphia High School and Heidelberg College, Burt was known for his exceptional football skills. He played a combined seven years of football for the two schools under the guidance of Heidelberg’s Hall of Fame Coach, Paul Hoernermann. Burt was a member of the 1944 New Philadelphia High School undefeated football team and was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015. He also earned an honorable mention for the All-Ohio Team during his 1950 season with Heidelberg University.

Professionally, Burt was a teacher and a coach for schools in Newcomerstown, Midvale, and New Philadelphia. The final 17 years of his career were spent as a Guidance Counselor, where he influenced many young lives prior to his retirement in 1986.

On July 31, 1948, Burt married the love of his life, the former Jean Dudley. The two celebrated 67 years of marriage in 2015. Burt loved being outdoors, as well as cheering on his favorite sports teams, but above all else, Burt loved time spent with his family.

Burt was an active member of Jerusalem Church, where he taught Sunday school classes for over 50 years. He also held many leadership offices and positions in the church, including that of Elder. Burt will be remembered for his honesty, integrity, humility, and his deep faith.

His surviving family includes, his wife, Jean; their two children, Mark S. Beaber of New Philadelphia and Rebecca J. Beaber of Columbus; a grandson, Mark (Jamie) Beaber; three great-grandsons, Nathan, Seth, and Luke Beaber; a sister, Janet (Marvin) Renner; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and close friends.

In addition to his parents, Burt was preceded in death by two brothers, David and William Beaber, and a daughter-in-law, Pam Beaber.

The family will greet guests on Monday, June 20 from 11:30am – 1:30pm in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia where a funeral service led by Pastor Brian Flood will begin at 1:30pm. Burial will follow in Jerusalem Church Cemetery.
