Loretta M. Edie, age 96, died Saturday, March 24, 2018, in Hennis Care Centre at Dover following a period of declining health.
Born August 10, 1921, in New Philadelphia, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Samuel W. and Clara C. (Dorsey) Kopp.
Loretta married Harold “Bud” Edie on October 28, 1940 and briefly worked together at Republic Steel as crane operators. They shared a marriage surrounded in love for 73 years.
Together Loretta and Bud served as foster parents for more than 30 years, caring for as many as 14 children at a time and ultimately fostered more than 200 children. In 1990 they were awarded the Robert E. Torgler Award for their commitment to fostering. Loretta loved to care for her family and spend time with them. She enjoyed listening to music, singing with her daughter Linda, and participating in activities and parties at the nursing home.
Through the years, the family’s faith was nurtured at the former St. Theresa’s Catholic Church and most recently at the St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church at Newcomerstown.
Loretta is survived by children Harold Eugene “Gene” Edie, Jr. of Newcomerstown, Samuel (Daisy) Edie of Dennison, Marsha (fiancé, Ronald Jones) Edie of Canton, Donald Edie of Arizona, Linda (Steve) Domer of Dover, Tina Coleman Edie of New Philadelphia, Tara (John) Aguiar of Canton; a daughter-in-law, Peg; and siblings, Sam Kopp, Edward (Adrianne) Kopp, Larry Kopp, Daniel (Carol) Kopp, Eleanor Tylka, Marjorie (Marion) Degen, and Carol Brick; a brother Clarence Basiletti; and a sister-in-law, Evey Kopp.
Completing the family are numerous grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Loretta was preceded in death by sons, Jerry and James Edie; and a grandson, Isaiah Coleman; and siblings, James Kopp, Mary McConnell, and Maxine Basiletti.
The family will greet guests on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 from 6 to 8 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A service will be held on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at 2 PM in the funeral home chapel at New Philadelphia. Private inurnment will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery at a later date.
