Lloyd F. “Squirt” McCrone, age 89 of Newcomerstown, died peacefully, January 19, 2016, while in the care of Community Hospice House.
A son of the late M. “Mike” and Wilda (Harboldt) McCrone, Squirt was born on January 21, 1926 in the family home at Newcomerstown.
He attended Newcomerstown Schools and entered into the United States Navy where he served aboard the USS Cushing, stationed in the South Pacific, during World War II. He was honorably discharged as Radioman third-class.
On June 7, 1947, Squirt married the love of his life, the former Jayne Steinbach and together the couple raised one daughter and shared in 32 years of marriage prior to Jayne’s passing in April 1979. In 1957, Squirt began working for the former Seiberling Tire and remained with the firm as it transitioned to General Tire. Throughout his tenure at the plant, he held various positions and retired as the General Foreman of the extrusion department in 1988.
An important part of Squirt’s life was his church family. He was a lifelong member of the Newcomerstown Church of Christ, where he served many years as a song leader and Sunday school teacher. His hobbies included fishing and driving his classic Cadillac Convertible; he later traded it in for a scooter and bright orange flag. His outgoing personality allowed him to make many friends through the years and his front porch became the local hang out and conversation center as he enjoyed the company of family and friends who stopped to visit, share stories and tell jokes.
Squirt will be missed by his daughter, Brenda (Bob) Berry of Christiana, TN; two grandchildren, Bart (Sheila) Berry of Murfreesboro, TN, and Brigette Wildes of Woodbury, TN; six great-grandchildren, Kayla, Jacob, Zachary, Joshua, Matthew, and Hannah; a brother, Willard (Pat) McCrone of Newcomerstown; special friends and neighbors, Tim and Susan Celuch as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Squirt was preceded in death by a brother, Roger McCrone.
Mr. Charles Newell will lead a memorial service celebrating Squirt’s life in the Newcomerstown Church of Christ on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 11 AM. The family will greet guests one hour prior to the service from 10-11 AM. Inurnment will follow in Union Cemetery at Port Washington.
