Lewis Victor Shroyer

Lewis Victor Shroyer, 81, of Dover, died Saturday, December 24, 2016 following a period of declining health.

A son of the late Leaman James and Winifred “Winnie” (Horsfall) Shroyer, Lewis was born October 12, 1935 at Sebring, Ohio.

Lewis was a lifelong resident of the area and was a veteran of the United States Army.  He was retired from Indian Valley Schools where he worked as a custodian for 25 years.

He was a member of Life Way Church at New Philadelphia, formerly the First Assembly of God Church, as well as a member of the New Philadelphia Elks #510.

Lewis was an avid sports fan.  He was fond of the Cleveland sports teams as well as the Ohio State Buckeyes.  He was a longtime high school and Class A umpire and was elected to the Cy Young Baseball Hall of Fame in 2013.  He especially enjoyed attending his grandson’s baseball games.  Lewis also enjoyed playing euchre with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Helen (Barnes) Shroyer whom he married on February 12, 1961 in the Main Street Church of God at Uhrichsville.  He is also survived by his children, Michael Shroyer of Dover, Russell (Liz) Shroyer of New Philadelphia and David Shroyer of Dover; his grandchildren, Rickquall (Josh) Beitzel, Rebeca, Allison and Mitchell Shroyer and three great granddaughters, Piper, Oakliee and Bella Beitzel.

Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Winnie, a sister, Hazel Maurer and two brothers, Kenneth and Ronnie Shroyer.

Visitation will be held on Friday, December 30, 2016 from 2 to 4 p.m. in Life Way Church at New Philadelphia with Elks Lodge of Sorrow services at 3:45 p.m.  A memorial service celebrating Lewis’ life will follow in the church at 4 p.m. with Pastor Larry Fletcher officiating.  Following the service, a memorial reception will be held in the church.  In keeping with Lewis’s wishes, cremation was conducted through the care of the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia and inurnment will be held in Union Cemetery at Uhrichsville at a later date.

The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in Lewis’ memory to the VA Clinic, 1260 Monroe Street NW #1A, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
