Lester M. Hicks, 81, of New Philadelphia, died Friday, September 8, 2006, in Union Hospital at Dover surrounded by his loving family.A son of the late William and Jenny (Corpman) Hicks, Lester was born December 3, 1924 at New Philadelphia, Ohio.He was a 1943 graduate of New Philadelphia High School and following graduation he enlisted with the United States Navy where he served aboard the U.S.S. Pensacola during World War II. Lester was retired from the U.S. Geological Survey, Department of the Interior where he worked as a Hydrologist.Lester was a life member of First Christian Church at New Philadelphia where he was a deacon for over 40 years. He was a life member of the New Philadelphia V.F.W as well as a life member of the New Philadelphia Elks Lodge.He was an avid bowler who was inducted in the Tuscarawas County Bowlers Hall of Fame on April 15, 1995. Lester was also at one time the Secretary of the Tuscarawas County Industrial Bowling Association. Lester also had a passion for golf in which he was a familiar face at Green Valley Golf Course at New Philadelphia.He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Jean (Engler) Hicks, whom he married on July 3, 1948 in Otterbein United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia; his children, David (Barb) Hicks of Salina, Kansas, Joyce (Cliff) Robson of New Philadelphia, Tim (Janie) Hicks of Salina, Kansas, Marilyn (Dave) Douglas of Dover and Kevin (Becka) Hicks of Uhrichsville; grandchildren, Amanda Hicks, Heather (Brandon) Hicks, Scott Sussman, Brent Robson, Aimee Robson, Brian Grygo, Brett Grygo , Brittany Grygo, Rachel Hicks and Paige Hicks; step grandchildren, Darren Euwer, Derek Euwer, Darrin Wendlindt and Darrah Wendlindt; siblings, Evelyn Moore of Columbus, Ohio, Ward (Betty) Hicks of New Philadelphia, Virgil (Wanita) Hicks of New Philadelphia, Foster (Roberta) Hicks of New Philadelphia and Gracie (Tom) Koller of New Philadelphia; brother-in-law, Gerald Ferall of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio and sister-in-law, Ellen Hicks of New Philadelphia.Lester was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Frank and his wife Stella “Anne” Hicks and Bill Hicks; one sister, Mary Ferell and one brother-in-law, Royce Moore.Family and friends may call on Sunday, September 10, 2006 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. The New Philadelphia Elks Lodge will conduct services at 3:45 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. A funeral service celebrating Lester’s life will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Chapel at New Philadelphia with Pastor Jim Borton officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia. Following the committal service, a memorial reception will be held in the Fellowship Hall of First Christian Church.Memorial contributions may be made in Lester’s memory to Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 201 West Third Street, Dover, OH 44622 and/or Hope Lodge, 11432 Mayfield Road, Cleveland, OH 44106.
