Leona Hinds

Leona Eileen Hinds, age 80, of New Philadelphia, died peacefully, Tuesday evening, September 23, 2014, in her daughter’s Baltic home surrounded by those who loved her deeply.

A daughter of the late Homer and Elsie Mae (Swauger) Porter, Leona was born at Glen Dale West Virginia on January 13, 1934.

On July 13, 1953, she married the love of her life Hugh David Woodrow Hinds and together the couple raised their children and shared in 41 years of marriage prior to his passing on March 9, 1993. An active member of the Tuscarawas Community, Leona was a member of the Tuscarawas Volunteer Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary and a 23 year employee of the Tuscarawas Branch of the Tuscarawas County Public Library. Even after retirement, Leona enjoyed volunteering for various duties at the library through the Friends of Library program and maintained regular attendance at the monthly book club.

In addition to her community activities, Leona was a long-time devoted member of Church of Christ at New Philadelphia, where she was enjoyed being a part of the church Benevolence Program and helping to serve during funeral dinners.

Above all, Leona’s family meant everything to her. She loved being with each of them and made it a point to be in attendance at each of her grandchildren’s sporting and school activities as well as spending time with her great-grandchildren.

She will be deeply missed by her daughters, Maleatha “Molly” (Patrick “Dean”) Hall of Baltic, Sarah (Eugene “Buster”) Rothacher of New Philadelphia, Doris (Wynn) Sigmond of Polk City Florida; a daughter-in-law, Nance Cox of Navarre; and brothers, Lloyd (Kay) Porter of Massillon, Leonard (Dreama) Porter of Tippecanoe.

Seven grandchildren, Amanda (Doug) Specht, Nicole (Jason) Beck, Brennon (Meredith) Hall, Kathrine (Andrew) Stahl, Anthony Rothacher, David (Britini) Hall, and Beka Rothacher, nine great-grandchildren, Austin Specht, Tori Specht, Taylor Beck, Madison Beck, Kalon Beck, Bryson Stahl, Braxton Stahl, Kip Hall, and Naomie Grove as well as numerous nieces and nephews complete the family.

In addition to her parents and husband, Leona was preceded in death by two sons, an infant son, “Buddy” and James R. Hinds.

The family will greet guests on Friday, September 26, 2014 from 5:00 – 8:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Minister Tim Hatfield will lead a service celebrating Leona’s life in the funeral home’s chapel on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at 10 AM. Burial will follow in Gnadenhutten’s Clay Union Cemetery. Following the service, all are invited to join the family for a time of food and fellowship the Church of Christ Social Hall at New Philadelphia.
