Leah Cory, age 82, of New Philadelphia, died early Saturday, October 13, 2012 in Mercy Medical Center at Canton following a brief illness.
A daughter of the late Thomas and Wilda (Schrecengost) Sowers, Leah was born at Rose Valley, Pennsylvania on September 26, 1930.
She was a graduate of Shannock Valley High School and on January 14, 1950 at Kittanning, Pennsylvania, Leah married Wayne Cory and together the couple raised two children and shared in nearly 60 years of marriage prior to his death on November 24, 2009.
An active member of the community, Leah has been a member of the First United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia since 1953. She served for a number of years as the Director of the Mobile Meals and later volunteered for the organization as a delivery driver. She has remained an active member of the New Philadelphia Elks Lodge, B.P.O.E. 510 Lady Elks, and had previously served as the Past President for the group. Additionally, she is a past Worthy Matron for the New Philadelphia Chapter 222 of the Order of the Eastern Star. She previously served the Tuscarawas County Board of Elections office in a number of capacities as well.
Above all her civic duties, Leah enjoyed spending time caring for her friends and neighbors in a variety of ways. She was known to stay up late playing the card game Hand and Foot with her friends as well as spending time gardening, and taking motorcycle trips with her late husband, Wayne.
Leah leaves behind her two children; daughter, Susan (Steve) Bair of New Philadelphia; son, Thomas Cory of Cheyenne, Wyoming; four grandchildren, Thomas “Bill” (fiancée, Bridget Hermann) Cory of Columbus, Ohio, Jessica (Matt) Kinsey of New Philadelphia, Shannon Cory of Alabama and Stephanie (fiancé Craig Lemle) of Columbus; three great-grandchildren, Julia, Jackson, and Madilyn Kinsey.
Two sisters, Beatrice Wagner of Colorado and Millie Reesman of Kittanning, Pennsylvania as well as numerous nieces and nephews complete the family.
The family will receive guests on Friday, October 19, 2012 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia with an Eastern Star Service scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM. Rev. Dr. Steven Bailey will lead a service celebrating Leah’s life on Saturday morning, October 20, 2012 at 10:00 AM. Burial alongside her husband will follow in the Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia.
Following services, all are invited to share a meal and fellowship in the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the New Philadelphia funeral home.
