Lawrence E. Peterman, 82, of New Philadelphia, passed away Sunday, August 12, 2007 at his home surrounded by his family following a courageous battle with cancer.Born September 1, 1924 at Barrs Mills, Ohio, Lawrence was the son of the late Arthur and Minnie (Olinger).He served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1945. He was in the 40th Honor Division National Guard of California and the 160th Infantry Division. Lawrence served his country on the front lines in the South Pacific for 297 consecutive days as a medic.Lawrence was employed at Greer Steel at Dover where he was a crane operator and car loader for 30 years. He retired from Greer on February 23, 1985. He was a lifetime member of the New Philadelphia V.F.W. #1445.Throughout his life, Lawrence enjoyed motorcycle riding, antique cars, operating and repairing heavy equipment. He also enjoyed listening to gospel and country music as well as gardening. Most of all, Lawrence loved spending time with family and friends.He is survived by his wife, Goldie M. (Milligan) Peterman, whom he married on January 12, 1953 at Indianapolis, Indiana; six children, Maretta Cottrell of New Philadelphia, Alan (Marty) Peterman of New Philadelphia, Debbie Sickels of New Philadelphia, Rickie (Tammie) Peterman of New Philadelphia, Jeffrey (Tracey) Peterman of Dennison and Cheryl (David) King of New Philadelphia; 14 grandchildren; one step-grandchild and 7 great grandchildren. Rose (Wayne) Kennison of Uhrichsville and Dean (Ruth) Gilmore of East Sparta, who were loved by Lawrence as brothers and sisters, complete the family.Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Viola Border and two brothers, Lloyd W. Peterman and Howard Peterman.Family and friends may call on Tuesday, August 14, 2007 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating Lawrence’s life will be held on Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Roger Warnes officiating. Burial will follow in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens at Dover.
